One host plant of spring azure caterpillars is the flowering dogwood tree, of which these caterpillars will eat the flowers and fruits. But did you know that spring azure caterpillars have bodyguards? These black garden ants are at the caterpillar tea party by special invitation!

Spring azure caterpillars can produce honeydew, a sweet substance that ants love. In exchange for this, the ants (who would usually love to eat caterpillars) will protect the spring azures from parasitoids like wasps or flies and other predators. To hint at their actual relationship in nature, the caterpillars are feeding the ants sugar here.
