This fabulous metallic tiger beetle is from the Tetracha genus! I saw these beetles running along the bank of the Las Piedras River at the Las Piedras Amazon Center, probably in search of insect prey! Tiger beetles are ferocious predators and some of the fastest beetles to run on land. In fact, they run faster than they can see and temporarily go blind at their top speeds. This is because their eyes don’t get enough light as they run and they can’t process all of the visual information coming in at once. They often need to stop mid-pursuit to reorient themselves and relocate their prey, explaining their stop-and-start movement!
